In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the arts community. Many of my longtime friends—jazz musicians and music educators—lost their income almost overnight as concerts, schools, and teaching opportunities disappeared. Unable to make rent or mortgage payments, many faced housing insecurity for the first time in their lives.
During this period, the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation began receiving urgent calls asking if there was anything we could do to help. After months of searching for a meaningful, long-term solution, I was introduced to Artspace. This national nonprofit has spent more than 40 years developing affordable housing for artists and creative professionals.
That discovery sparked the vision for Jazz Town USA. I amended our articles of incorporation to expand our mission to include building affordable housing and apartment communities for musicians, music educators, and creative artists—ensuring stability, dignity, and a place to live and create.
Jazz Town USA is committed to protecting the people who preserve our culture and keep the legacy of jazz alive.
